The Abagusii built dugout canoes (obwato) from mature hardwood or lighter species; builders judged a log's soundness by its resonance when struck, hollowed it with axes, adzes and driven wedges (and sometimes controlled fire), then widened the hull with heat and steam before balance-testing it on the water. The canoes were used to cross rivers and to fish.
